Historical note: At the end of the 1960's, the Santa Fe was looking for locomotives to replace the F3's used in passenger service, and wanted to keep the "streamlined" look that the public associated with premier passenger service. In addition, the railroad wanted to use a similar sleek look for its new high speed intermodal service. Requests for proposals for 3000-3600 hp locomotives in both cab and booster versions were sent out to all 3 major locomotive builders. EMD responded with the F45/FP45, based on the SD45; GE responded with the U30CG, based on the U30C; and ALCo responded with the C-636F, based on the C-636. Only the F45/FP45 and U30CG cab versions were ever built, but the C-636F remains as an intriging "might have been" possibility.
